The south west end of Rote Island has an array of world class surfing locations, from long winding lefts, to bone crushing rights. The west facing Nembrala Bay offers beautiful sunsets over the reef and view of close by islands. the south and south-west swells that pound all of the Indonesian shoreline from March to November, while it has offshore conditions all day in the prevailing South East trade winds, with light to variable conditions in early and late season and stiffer winds in July and August.
is the main wave to surf in Nembrala and is straight out in front of Nembrala Village. This Left is the main break fronting the resort and the premier wave in this region of Indonesia. The break has some similarities to the famous wave on Java, G-Land. Nembrala is definitely a softer and more “user friendly” wave than its namesake. The point like reef is approximately 400 yards long and broken into four separate take off zones; from top to bottom: The Point, The Steeple, Magic Mountain and Inner-tubes. Nembrala is a “wave magnet” and takes the predominant trade wind as off-shore. This wave can also be very good early and late season when the winds are light and variable in nature. The reef is non-threatening and the wave is not tide dependent, often better at low tide then high.
The Bommie is a section of reef on the north side of the large Nembrala channel. Although the Bommie is a Right/Left peak, the left is seldom surfed as it is not as organized as the right which ends in a deep water channel. The Bommie is a – lower the tide, the better the wave.
Suckies, or Sucky Mamas is just 10 minutes by boat. Suckies is a right hander which has a short but good barrel. On a higher tide it can be a fat wave. Suckies is a shorter wave but still a lot of fun. Suckies is offshore in the South East tradewinds from May to October.
Boa is about 15 minute by boat or a 10 minute drive in the car. This right-hander barrels right from the take off which can be steep and hollow and then a long rippable wall . Boa is best when the trade winds are very light so best surfed at early morning or during the wet season months from November to April.
The Waves T-land, one of Indonesia’s longest and consistent waves, a long left hander breaks on almost all tides from 2-15 ft, it has three sections with differing levels of difficulty. The trade winds blow consistently through the months of June through September offering good conditions for T-land. There are other rights and lefts on offer when prevailing weather and swell conditions coincide, the shoulder seasons of April, May, June/September, October, November opens up opportunities to surf other locations on Rote and outer islands.
